Getting Down About Life?
A few years ago, I was struggling to understand why things “weren’t working out.” That was what I thought, anyways. The truth? I was resisting what was actually happening, wanting reality to be different than what it was. I’ve come to realize this is one of the greatest points of human suffering: wanting things to be different than they are.
Now, I don’t mean staying in an abusive relationship or settling for a life sucking job or an unsafe living situation. As if I shouldn’t want those things to be different. No, I DO want those things to be different and I will make healthy choices to get into better, safer and healthier situations.
What I mean here is accepting what’s happening at face value. That life IS ups and downs.
As I drove on the interstate talking to a dear friend those many years ago, he said to me, “Sarah, this is life! Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. Sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down.”
It was like someone had lifted a veil from my eyes and I began to see life more realistically, more clearly. It’s ok when things are good or when they’re bad. The important thing to remember is that you’re getting through this! Thus, the inspiration for this quote!
How valuable would a reminder like this be hanging on your kitchen or bedroom wall? These types of reminders in my own home have been like supportive friends there to help me whenever I’m in need.
