Getting Down About Life?
A few years ago, I was struggling to understand why things “weren’t working out.” That was what I thought, anyway.
As I drove on the interstate one afternoon, talking to a dear friend, I asked him why things seemed to keep getting messed up in my life. He said to me, “Sarah, this is life! Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. Sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down.”
The truth? I was resisting what was actually happening, wanting reality to be different than it actually was. I saw a problem as something bad that shouldn’t be happening. But, in reality, problems are perceived as problems. Really, they are just a part of life like everything else.
It was like someone had lifted a veil from my eyes and I began to see life more realistically, more clearly.
It’s ok when things are good or when they’re bad. The important thing to remember is that I’m/you’re getting through this! And…it won’t last forever!
I’ve come to realize one of the greatest points of human suffering is wanting things to be different than they are.
And, more importantly, that acceptance in the moment can be a gateway to a sense of personal freedom and empowerment, like I’d never felt before.
Now, I don’t mean staying in an abusive relationship or settling for a life sucking job or an unsafe living situation just because that’s what’s happening. No. What I can do is accept what’s happening in the moment and take the necessary steps I need to get myself into a better, safer situation A.S.A.P.
Need a reminder on your wall like this?
Take care and know, if you’re going through a hard time, you’re getting through this! And, it won’t always be this way!
Whether we like it or not, Life is full of change. And, this too will change.
