C. G. Jung and The Privilege of a Lifetime
Dear Reader,
When I saw this quote, it struck me.
It’s so simple.
The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are. – C. G. Jung
And, there’s actually a lot packed into these few words.
So, let’s unpack it, shall we?
“The privilege of a lifetime…” What does this mean? The word privilege means to be granted the right or advantage to something.
So, how could becoming who you truly are be a privilege? Can anyone else really be you? No. So, it’s exclusive to you. And, how could this actually be a human right, to truly become who you are? Interesting things to consider? Where may this right not exist in our internal worlds or in the “external” world we live in? Where does it exist? How could it exist regardless of where we are in the world?

The next line, “is to become…” Becoming connotes that something is happening, an evolution of sorts, over time. If we already are it then how can we become it? Interesting to ponder. Have we forgotten we’re it? Do we need to re-learn, or learn all together, how to be who we already are?
And then, “who you truly are.” Who am I? Who are you? Who are we? These are powerful questions. I invite you to not answer with your mind, but to feel into the questions. Who are you really? Do you feel the truth of that in your body? And, he says, “truly are.” Not who you might think you are or believe you are. This is not about thinking, “I suck,” “I’m not important,” “I don’t matter,” “I’m the bomb diggity,” “I’m the most important thing since sliced bread!” etc. This is much deeper than that and can be much simpler.
Who am I truly?
The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are. – C. G. Jung
When I read it all together again, it means something similar and something new, different. The gift I can give to myself is to become who I already am!
What a gift to myself, to others and to Life itself!
Well, you and I’ve got some things to think about after this blog post!
How about scheduling a reminder into your phone in four days time to come back to this blog post and share your comments below, once you’ve pondered these questions? I’d love to know what you’re thinking about all of this!
Take care.
